Comparison between qualitative and semiquantitative catheter-tip cultures: laboratory diagnosis of catheter-related infection in newborns
This prospective study evaluated semiquantitative and qualitative catheter-culture methods for diagnosis of catheter-related infection (CRI) in newborns. Catheter tips from newborns admitted to the Neonatal Unit of the University Hospital of the Botucatu Medical School, UNESP were included in the study. Catheter cultures were performed with both semiquantitative and qualitative techniques. For ...
متن کاملSonication for diagnosis of catheter-related infection is not better than traditional roll-plate culture: a prospective cohort study with 975 central venous catheters.
This prospective randomized controlled study with 975 nontunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) showed that the semiquantitative roll-plate culture technique (SQC) was as accurate as the sonication method for diagnosis of catheter-related infections. Sonication is difficult to standardize, whereas SQC is simpler, faster, and as reliable as the sonication method for culturing CVCs.
متن کاملCultures of Needleless Connectors Are Useful for Ruling Out Central Venous Catheter Colonization.
Semiquantitative cultures of skin surrounding intravascular catheter entry sites and catheter hubs have high negative predictive values for catheter tip colonization. However, culturing samples from the inner side of the hub requires the catheter to be manipulated, thus increasing the risk of migration of microorganisms into the bloodstream. Today, hubs are closed using needleless connectors (N...
متن کاملValue of bedside plating of semiquantitative cultures for diagnosis of central venous catheter-related infections in ICU patients.
We compared semiquantitative central venous catheter tip cultures plated at the bedside with those cultured in the laboratory, to determine if bedside plating provides a significantly better yield. Paired segments of 197 catheter tips from 92 surgical and medical ICU patients were evaluated prospectively. A total of 31 catheter tip cultures were positive for > or = 15 organisms per agar plate, ...
متن کاملCatheter-related candidemia and identification of causative Candida species in patients with cardiovascular disorder
Background and Purpose: Catheter-related blood circulation infection is the most dangerous and serious side-effects of vascular catheters, which leads to the enhancement of the costs, mortality, and hospital stay duration, especially in the Intensive Care Unit. Regarding this, the aim of the current study was to identify the prevalence of catheter-induced candidemia in the Tehran Heart Center, ...
